I don’t think there is a single soul that is not anticipating this new year with expectation and some trepidation, too.
Certainly, we hope that we will be able to walk down the street mask free, safely hug our friends and our beloved elders, and enjoy social and cultural gatherings—and re-opened cafes and restaurants—once again!
And then the trepidation—not only about the continued and difficult impacts of the virus, but of the other social, political and economic “resets” that are shifting the world we knew in perhaps irreversible ways. The future that lies before us is quite uncertain.
As we consider our year ahead, I want to share the collage that I created in the spring of 2019 when my life was (voluntarily) in great flux. I had just left a job of nine years, my boys were out and on their own, and I was selling our family’s home. Besides knowing I was moving, I had no idea exactly where I’d be living or what I would be doing next!
The image above that emerged during that thoughtful afternoon is now a powerful talisman for me, and I hope perhaps it will inspire you as we gird ourselves for the months ahead.
First, there is the magnificent door, ornately carved and embellished, with an arch of resplendent peacocks in full-feathered display. Behind that door, where the future awaits, is a place of uplifting promise, though presently unseen. With the hundreds of awakened eyes peering out from the peacocks’ tails—symbolizing vision and rebirth—I trust that, whatever the “mix” will be, much beauty, goodness, and worth will prevail.
Then, there are the images of the “assets” I have to accompany me through that door. First, the rings of a tree—representing the rich experience I’ve gained from years of life. The beads—symbolizing all the pearls of wisdom I’ve collected along the way. And, finally, the paintbrush, affirming I have the tools necessary to meet and create a valuable, meaningful future.
Seated above the door is a small meditating figure with, in my view, a supportive community of dear and supportive friends, reminding me that this is not a journey I’ll be taking alone!
And thus, this little collage assures me that I have everything I need to go into the unknown with faith, hope, love…and assets!
How is this image resonating for you? When you imagine a similar image for yourself, what are the assets you have to bring to your future?
Be grateful for them! Hold onto them dearly! They are the foundation of your resilience and capacity to respond, adapt and persevere in a year that will surely call on all these things!
I send you heartfelt wishes for your 2021!
